Ingrown Toenails

Medically known as OnychocryptosisThis condition is when the nail starts to grow into the nail bed causing pain, swelling, redness, often accompanied by pus and infection. Most commonly caused by tight or constrictive footwear and may also be caused by ‘bathroom surgery’ when nails are trimmed incorrectly. Fungal nails may be a predisposing factor that causes the pressure from the thickened nail to press into the nail bed causing pain and discomfort. Toe deformities may also be a contributing factor. It often affects the big toes and rarely may also occur on the smaller toes.
